  • A scan of a memorial card for Louis Novak, a child with intellectual and developmental disabilities who died on August 20, 1972, at the age of 15 as a resident of Ridgeview. Novak drowned in an incident involving other residents of the institution. His death, along with other deaths and injuries to residents at institutions, heightened the call for better treatment of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and deinstitutionalization.
