Finding Aids

Not everything held by our Historic Pittsburgh partners are digitized and can be found online, and instead must be searched for in finding aids (also known as collection guides). Finding aids such as these include a brief overview of each collection, information about the person, organization or institution who created the collection, and typically an inventory which lists each folder in the collection.

At the present, finding aids to collections held within the University of Pittsburgh Library System, which include Archives & Special Collections and the Center for American Music, along with collections held by the Detre Library & Archives at the Heinz History Center and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, are available to be searched and browsed online. This comprises nearly 2,000 finding aids that describe archival collections documenting greater Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania-area history.
