Description
Mary Lachman was born in 1889 in Pittsburgh to Russian immigrant parents. She lived downtown before moving to Oakland. Raised in an Orthodox Jewish family, she eventually adopted a more conservative practice. Despite facing anti-Semitic sentiments in her youth, she went on to work as a buyer for a ready-to-wear clothing wholesaler. Lachman describes meeting her husband, a Spanish-American War veteran, and marrying him after a courtship. They lived in different places in Oakland. She actively participated in organizations such as the Council of Jewish Women, engaging in charitable work, and her husband was involved in the Spanish War Veterans. The interview touches on her family's immigration, her father's occupation as a peddler, and the challenges they faced due to their Jewish identity.
