Description
The Homestead Carnegie Library, founded in 1898, is unique in the fact that is more like a community center. The establishment encompasses a concert hall, and an athletic club complete with a pool, basketball court, running track and gymnasium. While the library was loved by the community, it was made famous by swimming coach Jack Scarry and the women swimmers he coached. Jack Scarry played water polo for the Army in 1918 and would go on to coach several women through the Homestead Library Athletic Club Swim Team to National, International and Olympic success. These six women swam with success for Jack Scarry. Second from the left is Lenore Kight. Lenore competed in the 1932 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, taking home a silver medal in the 400m freestyle event. She would continue her success at the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics, winning bronze in the 400m freestyle event. Throughout her amateur career Lenore Kight would set 7 world and 24 U.S. Records.
