Description
The aerial view of St. Anthony's School for Exceptional Children reveals the size of the complex. The original classroom building is on the right, with the large classroom building and chapel added in 1959 to the left. Established in 1952 by the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, St. Anthony's School for Exceptional Children was built on Hulton Road between Thirteenth and Fifteenth Streets to cater to children with disabilities. Previous to this, St. Anthony's had been an orphanage run by the Catholic Diocese. When the school opened, there were 45 students enrolled, but the numbers increased later, which led to the expansion mentioned above in 1959. In 1963, St. Anthony's added a vocational program to their educational services. The 1990s brought a decline to the enrollment at St. Anthony's, as children were mainstreamed to other parochial schools within the diocese. The school closed soon after, was sold and now the property belongs to The Summit at Oakmont, a development of private homes.
