Description
This riverfront tent is one of many structures erected in Oakmont along the river by visitors in the summertime. While some people built larger, more resilient structures, a tent was a much cheaper way to vacation in Oakmont. Oakmont attracted many Pittsburghers on weekends and holidays as a resort destination. Visitors came by both train and boat. Oakmont even had to hire more policemen to keep watch over the large influx of people. Summer cottages were built in the Morris Camps section of Oakmont, many of which have been converted to permanent residences. A camp like this one could be spotted many places along the Allegheny River. Originally from the Oakmont Centennial Book Collection.
