Description
Citizens of Oakmont wait on the grassy area across the tracks from the train station, ready to board the approaching train. Why they could not wait on the platform is unknown. This photo was taken shortly before the Pennsylvania Railroad halted passenger service in 1964. Passenger trains had been going through Allegheny County since 1853. A bit of the roof of the Oakmont Train Station is visible on the left edge of the photo; an advertisement for Coca Cola on another building can be read just below the overhang. The Oakmont Train Station was demolished in June 1970 after even freight service stopped coming to Oakmont. Originally from the collection of Rita Young.
