Description
When the United States entered World War I and Lieutenant Colonel Edgar Jadwin, head of the United States Engineers Office in Pittsburgh, started a regiment of soldiers in Pittsburgh, they trained at Camp Gaillard in Oakmont. The regiment, the 15th Army Engineers, lived in the tents at Camp Gaillard until July 1917 when they shipped out to Europe. The soldiers were trained to build roads, bridges, and docks. The Oakmont community rallied behind the soldiers training at Camp Gaillard. The YMCA set up a tent on camp grounds to provide soldiers the opportunity to relax when they were not training. A historic marker was erected at the site of Camp Gaillard, approximately where the Oakmont service plaza on the PA Turnpike now stands.
