Description
In the children's section of the Oakmont Carnegie Library, Sara Boyle, director of the library from 1925 to 1968, assists young students. One boy sits at a table and works industriously at his homework. Other children select books from the shelves. One girl selects Cornelia Meigs' The Willow Whistle from the top shelf. Andrew Carnegie donated money for the building of a library in Oakmont at the request of his cousin, Leander M. Morris, who lived in Oakmont. Carnegie ended up giving $25,000 to the establishment of the library. William Braithwait worked as the contractor for the library; the building cost $17,956 to build. Oakmont Carnegie Library opened in 1901. The initial collection consisted of 2,603 books, purchased using some of the money from Carnegie's donation and the rest from the Oakmont School Board. The library was renovated and expended in 2005, and has become a vibrant community center for the citizens of Oakmont and surrounding areas.
