Description
Teen boys visit the Oakmont Carnegie Library in 1946. The boy in front wearing a fur lined coat looks askance at the photographer. Sara Boyle, director of the library from 1925-1968, stands at the left, evidently looking through a card catalog. Two other librarians are also at work. Andrew Carnegie donated money for the building of a library in Oakmont at the request of his cousin, Leander M. Morris, who lived in Oakmont. Carnegie ended up giving $25,000 to the establishment of the library. William Braithwait worked as the contractor for the library; the building cost $17,956 to build. Oakmont Carnegie Library opened in 1901. The initial collection consisted of 2,603 books, purchased using some of the money from Carnegie's donation and the rest from the Oakmont School Board. The library was renovated and expended in 2005, and has become a vibrant community center for the citizens of Oakmont and surrounding areas.
