Description
Looking up at the war memorial from the base, this picture shows the plaque at the bottom and Democracy on top. The sculptor, J. Vittori of Pittsburgh, described the sculpture thus: "Democracy holding the torch of Liberty in the left hand while on its knee rests a large book representing the great record of American Democracy past, present and future." The monument stands on Oakmont Carnegie Library grounds at the corner of Allegheny River Boulevard, visible behind the statue, and Pennsylvania Avenue. The idea for the memorial came from lawyer Frank F. Canuti; he organized the Oakmont Memorial Association in 1922 in the month of June to plan the monument. The cost of the sculpture ended up being $7,000. This sum was gathered by public subscription, which was encouraged by the offering of an engraved copy of the sculpture with Vittori's description, as read above, for each subscriber. The monument's dedication occurred on May 25, 1924. A time capsule was buried under the statue with a roll of names of contributors to the monument- this was unearthed when the statue was refinished in 1989 and now resides in the Oakmont Carnegie Library Archives. Originally from the collection of Rita Young.
