Description
This beautiful old photograph from 1897 shows the house of James Hulton, who the Hulton Bridge was named after. Indeed, Oakmont was called Hulton for a large period of it's history, and the original post office in Oakmont was called the Hulton Post Office. Memorabilia labeled 'Hulton, PA' persists into the 1930s, well after Oakmont had been decided as the official name of the town. In this picture, two of his female family members stand on the porch. Two men stand outside, prepared to pole someone across the river. Unfortunately, someone laminated this photograph and did it badly; what looks like scratches all over the picture are actually ridges in the lamination. Hulton ran a ferry from his house beside the Allegheny River. He carried individuals across in a rowboat, while cargo or wagons were taken across on a flatboat. Originally from the collection of Joseph Grubbs.
