Description
The Hulton Bridge, pictured here, connects Oakmont to Harmarville, visible across the river. The photographer was standing in Oakmont. The designer J.G. Chalfont was a county engineer, and construction was completed by the American Bridge Company. The bridge cost a total of 306,000 dollars to erect and is 1,544 feet long. The width when first constructed was 21 feet 8 inches, but the addition of concrete barriers later on narrowed the bridge. In 1975, the bridge closed for seven months for serious repairs, starting in May , which caused troublesome traffic tie-ups for commuters. The bridge's name was changed to Joseph Bonetto Bridge for a short while in 1989, in honor of the late state legislator from nearby Plum, however a public outcry and petitioning got the name returned to its original form. While the Oakmont Library Archives has much information about the Hulton Bridge, including original news clippings and other materials, any further information about the history or construction of the Hulton Bridge is welcomed by the Archives staff, particularly information that may help solve the mystery of when exactly the Hulton Bridge opened to traffic. Hulton Bridge is one of Pittsburgh's few remaining truss bridges. Originally from the Oakmont Centennial Book Collection.
