Description
Some of the worst flooding during the St. Patrick's Day flood of 1936 occurred on the southern end of Oakmont Avenue, now called Allegheny River Boulevard, between College Avenue and Plum Street. This are was affected by the flooding of the Allegheny River and the flooding of Plum Creek, caused by a backlog of water unable to enter the river. By the time this photo was taken, the water has begun to recede, judging by the clearer road visible in the rear center of the photograph, which appears to be drivable now. That section of road rises higher than the flooded portion, thus escaping much of the damage. On the far left of the photo is a used car dealership. Just to the right of that, people walk the railroad tracks, surveying the damage to Oakmont. Since the train tracks were not covered by the water, they served as an ideal vantage point for the townsfolk. This picture also shows just how disgusting the flood waters were, covered with debris and other detritus. The flood caused damage to over 130 buildings in structures in the Oakmont area alone. Originally from the Moss Collection.
