Description
Oakmont Avenue, now named Allegheny River Boulevard, flooded badly at the southern end during the St. Patrick's Day flood of 1936. This photo focuses on the area between Plum Street and College Avenue. On the porches of many of the houses and of Reed's Apartments, people gather to watch the progress of the rising water and probably to wait for rescue. A man in a canoe looks back at the crowded porch, presumably deciding whether to help or not, since his craft could not take nearly that many people. Between the two telephone poles, there is a car that has been abandoned to the water, which has risen about halfway up its doors. Behind the car, a number of people stand in the road, which is a bit higher in that location, and thus much less flooded. The flood caused damage to over 130 buildings in structures in the Oakmont area alone.
