Description
Oakmont Volunteer Fire Department members pose standing alongside and in the fire truck. Junior, the unofficial mascot of the fire department is also included in the picture, sitting atop the truck. Junior was extremely faithful and ran to the station as soon as the whistle blew to ride the fire truck to the fire. The dog was so dependable, he appeared in a page one article in the Advance Leader on January 14, 1938, that reads in part, "Bulletin! Here's News! Junior, mascot of the Oakmont Volunter Fire Department, missed the first fire of his life at the fire station. For some unknown reason, he missed the fire truck." Accounts vary as to when the fire department was founded. A group organized in 1907 as volunteer firemen, and then reorganized within the borough in 1921. Originally from Mark Carlberg Collection.
