Description
This photo shows the country club from the first green. Henry C. Fownes, a steel manufacturer in Pittsburgh, got together with friends and family to organize the Oakmont Country Club. In 1903, the Lee heirs sold 180 acres of the White Oak Levels to the Oakmont Land Company. That land, along with another ten acres, ultimately became the Oakmont Country Club, which took two years to build. The Country Club is located on Hulton Road. The Oakmont Country Club has hosted a large number of golf championships: seven U.S. Opens, five U.S. amateurs, three PGA championships, and one U.S. Woman's Open. Oakmont Country Club's golf course was where Johnny Miller achieved a final round score of 63 in the 1973 U.S. Open, which has been called "the greatest round of the 20th century." Originally from the collection of Vince Provenza.
