Description
Greek Orthodox Christians purchased the land to build a church in 1922, but a lack of funding prevented their dream from materializing. During WWII, fundraising efforts by the Ladies‚ÇÖ Auxiliary resulted in the purchase of the Anderson estate at 12 Washington Avenue, where the present church was dedicated in 1973. The website for the church is www.dormitionpgh.org. In this photograph of the stained glass inside the church, Jesus floats in the middle upon a cloud, his head enclosed in a halo also containing a Greek cross. The upper left pane has a verse from Matt 11:28 in Greek; the upper right panel has the same verse in English.
