Description
The Carl H. Thoma Family Papers and Photographs contains materials created by Carl H. Thoma and his family, including personal papers, photographs, a scrapbook, photo albums, property records, professional papers, and financial records. The collection includes documents such as Thoma's college diploma, his draft registration card, and his father's naturalization certificate. Also included are a selection of business documents (including property deeds, civil service application correspondence, and an appointment book), and hundreds of photographs of the Thoma family and their friends. A portion of the photographs are collected into scrapbooks, including one documenting Carl and Marie's honeymoon to the Western United States. Of particular interest are items displaying the Thoma's German heritage, such as a handwritten note in German and a German prayer book, and a collection of photographs depicting the Pittsburgh Flood of 1936. Finally, there are also several images of the Leuzinger and Lance families, relatives of Marie Thoma., Carl H. Thoma Family Papers and Photographs, 1883-1952, MSS 1173, Thomas and Katherine Detre Library and Archives, Senator John Heinz History Center, Carol Moyer Gift 1986 1987.0058, Carl Henry Thoma was a Pittsburgh, Pa. native of German heritage who owned and operated his own bar and restaurant. Carl Henry Thoma was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 24, 1895 to Paul and Elizabeth (née Wittmer) Thoma. Paul Thoma, originally from Germany, immigrated to the United States in 1873 and was naturalized in 1883. He owned Paul Thoma's Restaurant and Bar, located in the Lawrenceville area. Elizabeth Thoma was born in Pennsylvania to two German immigrants. Carl Thoma graduated from Pittsburgh Central High School in 1912 and continued his education at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. He graduated in 1916 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Commercial Engineering. After graduating, he worked in Pittsburgh at several different businesses, including the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Rail Road and the Duquesne Light Company. He married Marie E. Lance in 1919 and they traveled across the country for their honeymoon. According to available records, they lived in the Beechview neighborhood and did not have any children. Carl H. Thoma died at home with his wife on January 31, 1962 due to an acute coronary occlusion. He is buried in St. Peter's Cemetery in the Lincoln-Larimer-Belmar area in Pittsburgh, Pa., Gift of Carol Moyer., Processed MSS 1173 7/25/2018 R.
