Description
The Clugston Family Papers include personal and business correspondence, diaries, surveys, and invitations. The bulk of materials are correspondence letters between family members concerning daily activities of family and friends. Most notable to the collection is the correspondence between Robert Clugston and the Mellon family. Correspondence includes a letter from Judge Thomas Mellon, dated January 22, 1862, and letters from T.A and J.R. Mellon. The letters from the Mellon Brothers, written throughout 1872, ask Clugston to survey land in the Pittsburgh area. Surveys are contained within the collection, however, the location of the surveys is not given., Clugston family papers, 1834-1978, MSS 0070, Library and Archives Division, Senator John Heinz History Center, Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania, Elizabeth Clugston Titzel gift 2003 1978.0082 papers, The Clugston family settled in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania. Robert Clugston (1832-1873) was the son of William and Mary Clugston. In the 1860s he became the first Allegheny County County Surveyor and County Engineer. Robert married Sarah Jane McWilliams in 1857 and had four children; Robert McCully (1871-?), William A., Sarah Agnes, and Mary Margaret (1869-1967). Robert McCully Clugston was a civil engineer and accounting executive for the Westinghouse Air Brake Company. William A. Clugston was also civil engineer, and advisor to Howard N.
