Description
Dixmont State Hospital, founded in 1848 by Dorothea Dix, began as the Insane Dept. of the Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh. This hospital was the first chartered public hospital in Pittsburgh and the first institution in Western Pennsylvania to offer treatment for the insane. The records include annual reports, clippings, documents, personal correspondence, post cards and receipts. There are also histories of Dorothea Dix, the hospital and West Penn Hospital. Most of the official documents were transferred to the Pennsylvania State Archives on August 6, 1980., Gift of Dr. Beryl R. Johnson, 1999, Processed, inventory available MSS 0329 11/11/2002 R.
