The G.A.R. was founded by Benjamin F. Stephenson on April 6, 1866. Membership was open to honorably discharged soldiers, sailors, or marines of the Union armed forces who served between April 12, 1861, and April 9, 1865. The last member died in 1955, and the organization was dissolved in 1956. For a time it was a powerful political influence, aligning itself closely with Republican policy. The society founded soldiers' homes, and was active in relief work and pension legislation. The G.A.R. started the celebration of Memorial Day in the North by a general order issued by John A.
