00:00:04.000 --> 00:01:51.000
Gladys E. Gosney: You like living there? Juanita Moutry: I love it.
Gosney: Do they have any type of activities that you-- Moutry: Yes, I had
just moved in--the first year I moved in I--I was appointed to act as
assistant floor chairman. And that is to check on the residents on my floor
if they haven't been seen in 2 or 3 days. I'm supposed to check and see if
they're all right. And I'm secretary of the Tenants council. Gosney: What
is this tenants council? The tenants council. Moutry: Well, all the tenants
are supposed to be members of the council. And we get together and arrange
for social affairs to be given at the building. For instance, on Tuesday
night, we play bingo. Friday night is a social night, we play cards. And we
are, for instance, the Parks and Recreation, they're taking us to Riverview
Park for a picnic. Box lunch. We also go on boat rides. We also go to
dinners. And we attended the flower show. They had a bus to pick us up.
Wait for us at the flower show and bring us back. They have all kinds of
activities for the senior citizens and I am really enjoying it. Gosney: Oh
good.

00:01:51.000 --> 00:02:01.000
Gosney: Did any, um, aspect of the Pittsburgh life come in conflict with
your upbringing?

00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:03.000
Moutry: Of the Pittsburgh life come in contact?

00:02:03.000 --> 00:02:10.000
Gosney: Any--any aspect of life in Pittsburgh come in conflict with your
upbringing?

00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:33.000
Moutry: Well, when Martin Luther King was was was murdered there was
uprisings and burnings and and bombings and all like that. That was
contrary to the way I was brought up. Gosney: I see.

00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:46.000
Gosney: Do you? What ethnic group feel closest to you besides your own?
More close to you than your own group? Do you have any particular ethnic
group?

00:02:46.000 --> 00:03:01.000
Moutry: No, I don't have any special ethnic group. And I look on other
ethnic groups as human beings. And I try to treat everyone like I want to
be treated.

00:03:01.000 --> 00:03:18.000
Gosney: Do you know of any ethnic group that you know is most different
from your own? You know that--that you feel is most different from your
own.

00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:36.000
Moutry: Well [laughs], there's a lot of ethnic groups that's different
from my group.

00:03:36.000 --> 00:04:21.000
Gosney: Do you know of any organization that has, I'll say, helped had an
effect on your family? You know, it has helped them in any way. I say
educational wise or marriage wise or any of those things or in the business
or professional or political way. Moutry: [??]organization? Gosney: Do you
belong to--do any in your family--perhaps I'll say, do they belong to any
organization then that would have helped you in any way or had any kind of
effect on your life? So far as the educational or soforth?

00:04:21.000 --> 00:04:39.000
Moutry: Well, I don't know of any--I don't know of any organizations had
any particular effect on my life. My daughter works for the March of Dimes
and I do a lot of volunteer work for them.

00:04:39.000 --> 00:04:52.000
Gosney: Okay. What class do you identify with? Do you--do you perceive any
class distinction in your community? Is there a class distinction there in
your community?

00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:54.000
Moutry: Is there a class distinction in my community?

00:04:54.000 --> 00:04:55.000
Gosney: And first, what class do you consider--

00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:59.000
Moutry:  The middle class.

00:04:59.000 --> 00:05:07.000
Gosney: Do you perceive any class distinction in your in in the community
where you live?

00:05:07.000 --> 00:05:11.000
Moutry: Class distinction in my community.

00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:23.000
Gosney: You see any different classes? There's a distinction, like some
are considered one class, lower class, working class.

00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:34.000
Moutry: Well, the community where I live, there are some middle class,
lower class. Gosney: I see.

00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:56.000
Gosney: Have any organization that you belong to affected your chances of
moving to a higher class? Moutry: No. Gosney: Are members of your
organization, upper class? I mean, this would, I imagine your organization,
the--

00:05:56.000 --> 00:06:10.000
Moutry: The Victory Charity Club, that's about the only organization that
I belong to. I would say the middle class.

00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:21.000
Gosney: Does membership in this group affect your position outside of the
group in the community?

00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:22.000
Moutry:  Say that again.

00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:43.000
Gosney: Does membership of this group--you are a member of the Victory
Chairty Club. Moutry: Yes. Gosney: Okay. Does this affect your position
outside of the group? In the community? Does it affect your position in any
way?

00:06:43.000 --> 00:06:58.000
Moutry: Uh, no. The Victory Charity Club is a very outstanding club in
Pittsburgh. And we're well known for the deeds we--

00:06:58.000 --> 00:07:07.000
Gosney: When it was first organized, was it organized as a group to help?
What was it? How was it first organized? Because--

00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:46.000
Moutry: It was first organized as a church group. To raise funds to help
the church financially. And the group of women enjoyed working together so
much so that they decided to form the club, which is made up of members of
different churches in the city of Pittsburgh. Not the original church where
it was organized.

00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:54.000
Gosney: Okay. What position do you hold in this Victory Charity club? In
this group?

00:07:54.000 --> 00:08:01.000
Moutry: I am financial Secretary and acting Treasurer.

00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:10.000
Gosney: Do you? What? Do you all have any other type of activities? What
are your future plans for this group? Tell me some of the things that
you--

00:08:10.000 --> 00:09:16.000
Moutry: Well, in in former years we used to have an annual tea that we
raised our money to help the need. And the club, they sort of got tired of
that, they wanted to do something different. For the last two years, we
sponsored a tour to the Dutch country. This year, I am chairman of a tour
going to New York to see the play, The Wiz, on Broadway. And aside from
that, uh, we don't have any other ways of raising money. Because before we
have the tea in the spring and a turkey raffle or something like that in
the fall, so they sort of got tired of that. That went on for about 25
years. So now we're doing something different and this way the members they
get to, they they are raising money, but they're getting a chance to
enjoy--enjoy themselves more so than they did when they was having the
teas.

00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:19.000
Gosney: This gives them a chance to--

00:09:19.000 --> 00:09:38.000
Moutry: And when it's all boiled down, they're making is just about as
much money as they did before with giving the teas with all the added
expense of printing the programs and so forth. This way it's just a matter
of promoting the tour and getting a chance to enjoy ourselves too.

00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:51.000
Gosney: In the future or, will this be the type of thing that you all will
be doing or going to places or sponsoring different sightseeing tours or
something of this kind or?

00:09:51.000 --> 00:10:14.000
Moutry: Well, I think that perhaps we will, because there are so many
clubs and church groups. They have their teas and everybody is sort of
tired of it. And and the the members we have now, they seem to enjoy going.
So I think that's what we'll do.

00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:33.000
Gosney: There was one thing that I did not ask you and I meant to ask you
in the very beginning when we were talking about family. You did say that
you had one daughter, but you have other. Do you have any other
grandchildren or anything? Moutry: I have-- Gosney: How many grandchildren
do you have?

00:10:33.000 --> 00:11:06.000
Moutry: I have one granddaughter. I have two grandchildren. My
granddaughter went to school in Switzerland for one year. The designing
school. I forget the name of the designing school in Switzerland that she
attended before she married. And now she's attending the Ivy, I thought it
was an art school. I think it's Ivy Arts School, over on the North Side.

00:11:06.000 --> 00:12:06.000
Moutry: She's attending there now because she has two children.
Gosney: Then that means you have one granddaughter and two great-grand--
Moutry: Sons. Gosney: Oh. Okay. I wanted to get that in because I didn't
get that in in the beginning. Okay. Okay. Thank you very much.
