Description
Four members of The Oakmont Woman's Club smile together for a photograph. The women are Mrs. Adam Vayda, Susan Leminger, Mrs. William Petitto and Mrs. Joseph Bond. Two of the women hold cups of tea with saucers. They wear fancy outfits for the occasion. The Woman's Club of Oakmont started in 1893, because five Oakmont ladies wanted to discuss an interesting pamphlet brought by a woman going from door to door. Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan, who lived for a time with the Wade family, were both made honorary members of The Woman's Club of Oakmont on December 12, 1893. The club has taken part in many community projects since its inception, including having helped the library. Until 1954, when the group bought the building shown here, located at Second Street and Delaware Avenue and formerly St. Irenaeus Catholic Church, the women held their meetings in members' homes. The building is known as the Civic and Youth Center. The group discusses literature, the arts, theater, crafts, gardening, scholarships and more. Originally from the collection of Mrs. William Petitto.
