Description
Some of Scaife Company's workers pose outside the building. Most of them do not appear particularly enthused about the group photo. In 1891, William Scaife and Sons Co. moved its iron plant from Pittsburgh to Oakmont. Charles Scaife, who owned the company at that time, was married to James Verner's daughter. She had inherited a large riverfront tract between Ann St. and Delaware Avenue from her father, and it was on that land that the Scaife Company built the plant. The Scaife Company also owned Scaife Field, located across Ann Street from the plant. Oakmont High School's home games took place at Scaife Field. Other Oakmont sports teams also used this field as their venue. When Riverside Park was constructed in the 1960s, it replaced Scaife Field in these capacities. The Scaife Building now houses Beverly Healthcare nursing home. Originally from the Louis Devic Collection.
