Description
The Hulton Ferry operates in this picture, carrying three passengers across the Allegheny River in a row boat. Note the puffed sleeves the women wear. James Hulton ran a ferry from his house beside the Allegheny River. He carried individuals across in a rowboat, while cargo or wagons were taken across on a flatboat. Indeed, Oakmont was called Hulton for a large period of it's history, and the original post office in Oakmont was called the Hulton Post Office. Memorabilia labeled 'Hulton, PA' persists into the 1930s, well after Oakmont had been decided as the official name of the town. Originally from the collection of Joseph Grubbs.
