Description
On St. Patrick's Day in 1936, the Allegheny River flooded and much of riverside Oakmont suddenly found itself underwater. The southern end of Oakmont Avenue, now called Allegheny River Boulevard, shown here, had some of the worst flooding, due to proximity to both the Allegheny and Plum Creek. The creek flooded too, unable to empty its waters into the river as it usually did. The water comes quite high in the area closest to the photographer; further into town, the road gains a bit of height and did not flood as badly. Reed's Apartments is visible on the right, along with some other houses and buildings. The railroad tracks, although not visible in this photograph, are just to the left of the man walking. During the flood, people frequently used the tracks as a vantage point from which to examine the extent of the destruction wreaked by the high waters. Over 130 buildings were damaged in Oakmont alone.
