Description
The foreground of this photograph reveals the amount of snow on the ground during the St. Patrick's Day Flood of 1936. The snow almost obscures the railroad tracks. Little trenches in the snow indicate where people have slogged through the snow at this higher ground to survey the damage done to Oakmont. On the right side of the image is a fence partially submerged in the swollen waters. Behind that is a house, lucky enough to be on ground high enough to escape inundation. Over 130 buildings were damaged in Oakmont alone.
