Description
This photograph shows W.C. Fownes, son of H.C. Fownes who was the founder of Oakmont Country Club. W.C. Fownes was president of the club from 1935 through 1948, as well as being the club's grounds committee chairman from 1911 to 1945. He was also the U.S.G.A. vice president from 1924 to 1925, their president from 1926 to 1927, and on their Implements and Balls Committee from 1924 to 1948. He was the United States Amateur Champion in 1910, qualifying for the U.S. Amateur nineteen times. In 1922 he was playing team captain and in 1924 was a team member of the Walker Cup Championships. He was the West Penn Amateur Champion 8 times, the Western Pennsylvania Open Champion 2 times, and the Pennsylvania Amateur Champion 4 times. His life was dedicated to the sport he loved, and his commitment lives on in the popularity of the Oakmont Country Club to this day.
