Description
This painting shows H.C. Fownes, who was the founder of the Oakmont County Club. He designed and supervised the construction of the O.C.C.'s golf course, and was president of the blub from 1903-1935. He took up golf in 1897 at the age of 41, and qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship in the years 1901, 1902, 1903, 1905, and 1907. In 1903, at the age of 47, he reached the quarterfinals. The success of his course design lives on in the popularity of the Oakmont Country Club to this day. Image courtesy John Fitzgerald and the Oakmont Country Club Archives.
