Description on the back of this photograph reads, “Mr. S. A. Swensrud, President of the Gulf Oil Corporation (left), formally dedicates the new Leovy Laboratory of Geophysics at the Gulf Research & Development Company plant at Harmarville, Pa. Assisting in the ceremony are Miss Helen Walton Leovy, daughter of the famous oil man honored, and Dr. Paul D. Foote, Gulf Vice President and Director of Research. The new building was dedicated to Frank Adair Leovy whose pioneering spirit and vision contributed greatly to the advancement of the sciences in oil exploration and production. Present at the function were prominent research scientists, Pittsburgh civic and business leaders, Company officials and news writers.” Approximately half of the 85,000 square feet of floor space in the facility devoted was used for analysis of geophysical data sent in by field crews. Gulf Oil’s international headquarters for research and development was located approximately ten miles from downtown Pittsburgh in Harmarville, Pennsylvania.
