Description
Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “Corrosion laboratory at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation’s research center at Brackenridge, Pa. Research on fine stainless steel is carried on in this laboratory.” The invention of stainless steel is most often credited to Harry Bearly of Sheffield, England, in 1912. In 1938 Allegheny Steel of Pittsburgh and Ludlum Steel of New York, both of which led the commercialization of stainless steel in the United States at the time, merged to form Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation. Allegheny Metal, first pioneered by Allegheny Ludlum, was chosen for the Chrysler Building in New York in 1927. In the following year this stainless steel was specified for the Empire State Building. Today, Allegheny Ludlum Corporation is a world leader in the production of stainless steels, silicon electrical steels, tool steels, titanium, nickel alloys, and serves customers in more than thirty countries.
