About the Pittsburgh Public Theater.

The Public’s mission is “to provide artistically diverse theatrical experiences of the highest quality.” Founded in 1974 by Margaret Rieck, Ben Shaktman, and Joan Apt, the first season began in 1975 with The Glass Menagerie (directed by Shaktman), One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (starring Pittsburgh-born Tom Atkins), and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night (with Leonard Nimoy as Malvolio). After performing for 24 years on Pittsburgh’s North Side, The Public moved to its permanent home at the state-of-the-art O’Reilly Theater located in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. The Public’s incredible reputation has led it to be where many productions premiere. Premiers staged at The Public include August Wilson's King Hedley II and Jitney, as well as Horton Foote's The Habitation of Dragons and Michael Cristofer's Amazing Grace, among others that have gone on to be performed in New York.
