The collection contains eight photographic images and two newspaper clippings mounted together depicting hospital workers at the emergency Influenza hospital located on Superior Street in Duquesne, Pennsylvania.
About the collection.
All photographs appear to have been taken the same day at the emergency Influenza hospital during the Influenza epidemic in 1918. These hospital workers played a critical role in the community's fight against influenza. While many African Americans were rejected for war time service overseas, as well as faced the discriminatory practices of The Red Cross, their participation in healthcare on the homefront was essential during 1918. In total, there were fourteen nurses working at this hospital in one of the hardest hit regions in the entire country. The names of nurses working at the Duquesne Emergency Hospital include: Julia Craig, Mrs. A. H. Buton, Mrs. Spencer Bell, Sadie Bond, Ethel Cole, and Etta Stokes. Although, none of the photographs in this collection include specific identification for the individuals depicted.
