The collection consists of the daily diary of Edward Rocco (E.R.) Montagna from January to December 1939. Entries include his thoughts on his family, his health, renting, financial difficulties, community, and Montagna's career as a musician in the Pittsburgh area.
About Edward Rocco (E.R.) Montagna.
Born in Roccacasale, Italy in 1881, Edward Rocco Montagna immigrated to the United States with his family in 1900. He filed for naturalization in 1907. In 1910, he enlisted in the United States Army and was discharged in 1913. Montagna would go on to work as a carpenter, music teacher, and later as an independent musician. An occupation he would hold for the rest of his life.
Montagna married Mary Louise Machurello (1895-1961) on May 17th, 1915, in Nanty Glo, Pennsylvania. The couple had eight children born between 1917 and 1936. By 1939, the family resided at 1830 Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1950, Montagna relocated to North Hollywood, California. He died in 1962 at aged 80.
