The Pittsburg Daily Dispatch and The Bulletin Added

We recently added 1,912 issues of The Pittsburg Daily Dispatch dating from 1849 with intermittent coverage through 1880. This collection is particularly exciting because it is one of the largest collections, and the only online version, of some of the earliest editions of this popular and influential Pittsburgh newspaper. This daily publication offers in-depth accounts that document Pittsburgh as a growing industrial city. Issues contain local news, announcements, and advertisements, as well as original reporting on national and international events. The bulk of this collection dates from 1860 to 1865, which provides details on the progression and impact of the Civil War both locally and nationwide. The collection is full-text searchable, but due to the small type size and the fragile nature of the original newspapers, a basic search may not return all possible results. As such, users are also encouraged to page through individual issues.

We also added 184 issues of The Bulletin dating from 1887 to 1892 to the Historic Pittsburgh Book Collection. The Bulletin was a weekly Pittsburgh society newspaper and literary journal that contains a variety of articles such as short stories, reviews of cultural events, and local society news. The publication was well-known for the detailed illustrations featured on the cover and alongside featured stories. The Bulletin is full-text searchable, but there are missing and damaged pages throughout the collection.
