Biography

Dr. Harry James Ford grew up on Pittsburgh's South Side until his family moved to the Homewood neighborhood of Pittsburgh in 1950. As a boy, he worked odd jobs collecting scrap metal and bottles, helping the rag man, and delivering groceries. While in high school, he worked at the Penhurst Fruit Market for three years, waiting on customers and organizing the produce displays. Ford graduated from Westinghouse High School and attended Southeastern University in Washington, DC, earning a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He later received his Master's of Business Administration from Atlanta University. Ford had a successful career as an international banker and university professor. As a banker, he worked in Pittsburgh; Washington, DC; and London. Ford presented trainings on international finance and trade to organizations such as the Department of Defense and the Federal National Mortgage Association. He continued his post-graduate studies by completing master's and doctoral degrees in Public Administration at NOVA Southeastern University (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida). His career in academia included adjunct professorships at Southeastern University, American University, and Howard University. He taught courses on international banking, trade, and corporate finance. Ford helped to develop the curriculum for a bachelor's degree in Commercial Banking at Southeastern University and served as the Director of MBA Graduate Studies at Strayer University.

In addition to his career in banking and academia, Ford pursued projects as a family historian. He researched the Armstead-Fagan family, creating a seven-generation family tree and family crest and co-founding the Armstead-Fagan Family Reunion. His interest in African-American history and culture prompted him to develop a collection of vinyl records spanning multiple musical and non-musical genres. Ford donated this collection, along with selected other materials, to the University of Pittsburgh Archives and Special Collection between 2022 and 2023.
