Biographical / Historical

Writer, filmmaker, and educator John A. Russo was born on September 2, 1939 in Clarion, Pennsylvania. While attending West Virginia University, he met George A. Romero during a visit with a mutual friend in Pittsburgh. Russo spent two years in the army after graduating, and returned to join Romero and Russell Streiner in their Pittsburgh-based commercial production company, The Latent Image. Over the course of the 1960s, The Latent Image produced numerous commercials and industrial films for both local and national campaigns, but from the beginning the group aspired to make the leap to features. Russo suggested to the group that they make a monster movie, financed collectively and through local investors. To make their first feature film, the group formed Image Ten, Inc.

The monster movie, mostly shot in Evans City, PA, was finished under the title "Night of the Flesheaters" before being retitled to "Night of Anubis" and, finally, being released as Night of the Living Dead. The script was written by Russo and Romero, with Russo serving various roles on set and playing a resurrected "ghoul" on screen. Advertised as "Pittsburgh's Own First Feature Film," Night premiered at the Fulton Theatre (now the Byham) in October 1968. It became a global phenomenon, inventing the modern zombie film and becoming a milestone in both the horror genre and in American independent cinema.

Russo served as a producer and actor for Romero's second film, the Pittsburgh-filmed romantic comedy There's Always Vanilla (1971), produced under the auspices of The Latent Image and reuniting a number of cast and crew from Night.

A prolific writer, Russo continued writing screenplays and began publishing novels in the 1970s. He wrote and directed the comedy The Booby Hatch (1976) (with co-writer and co-director Rudolph J. Ricci) and the horror movie Midnight (1982), which Russo adapted from his own 1980 novel. Russo wrote and produced the William Hinzman-directed slasher film The Majorettes (1986), adapted from Russo's 1979 novel. During this time he produced and directed a number of commercials and industrial films in Pittsburgh. In later years, he wrote and directed Santa Claws (1996), Saloonatics (2002), and My Uncle John Is a Zombie (2016) (co-directed with Robert Lucas).

Russo has written numerous books, including the novels Return of the Living Dead (1977), Limb to Limb (1981), Bloodsisters (1982), Inhuman (1986), Living Things (1988), Hell's Creation (1995), and The Hungry Dead (2013). His non-fiction books include The Complete Night of the Living Dead Filmbook (1989), Making Movies (1989), Scare Tactics (1992), and How to Make Your Own Feature Movie for $10,000 or Less (1995).

In addition to writing and filmmaking, Russo has taught filmmaking classes in the Pittsburgh area since the 1990s, including at the John Russo Movie Making Program at DuBois Business College.
