History
The Pittsburgh Typographical Union represents workers in all areas of the printing trade. It is the oldest continuously functioning labor union in the city of Pittsburgh, originating in 1836 as the Journeymen Printers of Pittsburgh. On May 3, 1852, the Pittsburgh union became one of the fourteen founding chapters of the International Typographical Union and was assigned the local number 7. The ITU was a powerful early member of the American Federation of Labor and fought to unionize the newspaper printing industry. In 1986, the ITU merged with the Communication Workers of America to form its Printing, Publishing, and Media Workers Sector. Even though the Pittsburgh local was designated the number CWA 14827, it is still known as Pittsburgh Typographical Union No. 7.
Scope and Content Notes
The Pittsburgh Typographical Union Local No. 7 Records consists of union contracts, correspondence, and constitutions. The collection primarily consists of drafts and final versions of various agreements and contracts between the Pittsburgh Typographical Union and various local printing employers including the Printing Industry Association of Western Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Newspaper Publishers' Association, and the Pittsburgh Press Company. The collection also contains correspondence and other materials pertaining to union benefits, pay rates, and negotiations with employers, including a 1973 survey of the printing industry in Pittsburgh. Also included are the union constitution and by-laws.
