Marie Tello Phillips was a poet, novelist, songwriter, reviewer, and essayist who lived mainly in Pittsburgh until her death in 1962. Her father was Pedro Cornelius Manly Tello, Confederate captain and Catholic weekly editor, who traced his lineage to the spouse of Christopher Columbus. Marie Tello Phillips began her literary career in 1918 by submitting a war poem to a local daily in Cleveland. In 1921 she moved to Pittsburgh, where she continued to publish poems in local periodicals. During her lifetime, she published seven books of verse, three novels, and a book of essays. Her work was included in a number of anthologies, including the Davis Anthology and American Women Poets in 1937. She was a contributor to magazines such as Poetry Review, Poetry Today, and Contemporary Vision. Marie Tello Phillips was also the recipient of many awards and honors, including recognition by the Poetry League of London, the Institut Litteraire et Artistique de France, and the National League of American Pen Women. She was active in literary organizations, such as the Poetry Society of America, the Eugene Field Society, and the Pittsburgh Poetry Society. Some of her lyrics were set to music through collaboration with composers.
The Marie Tello Phillips Scrapbooks contain articles, newspaper clippings, correspondence, poems, songsheets, and photographs documenting the life and literary career of Marie Tello Phillips. Materials in the scrapbooks pertain to the years c1921 through 1950. A large number of newspaper and magazine articles featuring Phillips' work from the 1920s and 1930s are collected in the scrapbooks. Also included are clippings of poems from periodicals of this period. The scrapbooks contain correspondence between Marie Tello Phillips and fellow authors, publishers, editors, and readers, as well as articles related to Phillips' involvement in literary organizations, poetry societies, and publishing collaborations. A small portion of the material is made up of clippings from articles about Phillips' colleagues and collaborators. The scrapbooks also contain several pages of original photographs of Phillips and her associates.
