The Calvin family were early settlers in Beaver County, Pa. Stephen Calvin, born ca. 1740, Stephen Calvin, born ca. 1740, emigrated with his brother John to Beaver County, Pa. from New Jersey shortly after the Revolutionary War and purchased land in what is today Glasgow, Pa. Stephen Calvin II, grandson of the Stephen Calvin, was born in December of 1807, one of 12 children born to James and Elizabeth Calvin. After the death of James Calvin in 1832, the family moved to a nearby property where Stephen Calvin II remained for the rest of his life. In 1842, he married Jane Graham, and the couple had ten children. Stephen died in 1894 and was buried at New Salem Cemetery. After his death, the property was passed down to daughter, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Calvin, and remains in the possession of Calvin family descendants today.
The Calvin Family Papers consist of correspondence between family members, as well as financial and legal documents, focused primarily on Stephen Calvin II. A large portion of the collection consists of financial documents and receipts of various family members. The legal documents include property deeds for various properties, as well as a marriage certificate for Stephen and Jane Calvin. The collection also contains a variety of correspondence regarding both the immediate family as well as extended family members.
