James Verner Scaife, Jr. was the director of the Scaife Company (also known as Wm B. Scaife & Sons Company) and a member of the board of trustees for Magee Hospital and the Pittsburgh Zoological Society. Born in Pittsburgh on October 14, 1903 to James Verner Scaife, Sr. and Mary Scaife, Scaife Jr. was a graduate of Yale University. In 1932, Scaife married Mary Ellen Selden in Minneapolis. In 1927, his brother Allen Scaife, who also spent time overseeing the family business, married Sarah Mellon, Richard B. Mellon's daughter.
Scaife was president of the Wm B. Scaife & Sons Company from 1934 until 1945. The company was established in 1802 as a tin-plating firm. The company would go on to produce munitions during the War of 1812 and the Civil War, boilers for steamboats, and patented range boilers.
