Sam Nicotero is an actor, writer, critic and former radio show host in Pittsburgh, Pa. While serving in the US Navy from 1959 to 1965, he began his radio career as a booth announcer at WQED in 1962. From there he worked at several radio stations in West Virginia, Illinois and western Pennsylvania before adopting Tony Scott as a professional name and becoming a DJ and Program Director at WBVP in Beaver Falls, Pa. from 1968 to 1974. Nicotero spent the remainder of the 1970s at various radio stations in Los Angeles, Calif. before returning to Pittsburgh and working under his real name as a DJ at WDSY, a movie critic at KDKA, a talk show host at WMBA, and at other stations throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. While working in radio, Nicotero wrote a weekly column entitled "Rock Now" for the Beaver County Times and a weekly column entitled "Video-Daddio" for In Pittsburgh. In 2010, Nicotero published a book entitled In Self Defense: True to the Tragic Story of Roy Wetzel. In addition to hosting radio shows and writing, Nicotero has acted in plays in the Pittsburgh area and in films, such as The Mothman Prophesies and Wonder Boys.
Nicotero is a native of Pittsburgh who was born on July 6, 1941. He is married to Rita (Giesinger) Nicotero, and they have two children: Gina and Frank.
The Sam Nicotero Papers and Photographs include biographical information, news clippings, photographs and scripts that document all facets of his career. The biographical information consists of his resume and of newspaper articles written about him. The news clippings consist of his columns and of reviews of plays and films in which he appeared. The photographs depict Nicotero in The Mothman Prophecies and on the sets of unidentified plays and films. Other movie materials include a photocopy of a handwritten note from George Romero, scripts from My Bloody Valentine and Children of the Living Dead, and a prop from Wonder Boys.
There is one folder of oversize materials that consists of flyers advertising his films and his book, as well as newspaper advertisements announcing his column, "Rock Now."
