History

Andrew P. Zeedick taught biology and chemistry at Mt. Lebanon High School, Pittsburgh, Pa., in the 1960s. His father, Andrew Zeedick, Sr. (1906-1992) was the first vice president of the Greek Catholic Union in the city. Andrew Zeedick Sr's wife, Anna (1906-2003), daughter of George and Anna Mihalchik Cipa, was secretary and treasurer of the Rosary Society of the Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church in the 1960s. Andrew Zeedick Sr.'s father, Peter Ivan Zeedick (1890-1970), created the Russkij Den' (Greek Catholic Churches Day / Byzantine Catholic Churches Day) in Pittsburgh. Peter Ivan Zeedick's father, John Zeedick, Sr., came to America from Sambron, Slovakia in the late 1800s and settled in Punxsutawney, Pa.

The Byzantine Catholic Metropolia of Pittsburgh originally served members of the Ruthenian Catholic Church who were mainly Rusyns, Hungarians, Slovaks, and their descendants. The Metropolia has four components with the largest Archeparchy located in Pittsburgh, seated at the St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Cathedral in Munhall, Pa., which governs the Byzantine Catholic Church across western Pa., eastern Ohio, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, and West Virginia. The Archeparchy of Pittsburgh was established in 1924, renamed three times, and, as of 1977, was called Pittsburgh of the Byzantines. The Byzantine archdiocese is the seat of the only self-governing Eastern Catholic Church in the United States. The Archeparchy of Pittsburgh also oversees the SS. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Seminary, established in 1950, in the North Side neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The Byzantine archdiocese celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1974 and its 75th anniversary in 1999 at the David Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh. The first annual Russkij Den' (Greek Catholic Churches Day / Byzantine Catholic Churches Day) was held in 1921 in West View Park and gathered members of churches across Pittsburgh, initially organized by Dr. Peter Ivan Zeedick, son of John Zeedick, Sr.

Scope and Content Notes

The Andrew and Georgia Zeedick Collection is separated into three series, which include materials from Andrew Zeedick's time as a biology teacher at Mt. Lebanon High School, materials from Byzantine Churches in Pittsburgh, and ethnic music phonographic records.

Series I – Andrew P. Zeedick Papers – Biology Course at Mt. Lebanon HS (c.1960s)

This series is organized in two boxes and holds primarily biology topics taught by Andrew P. Zeedick at Mt. Lebanon High School. The lecture notes and supplemental materials consist of magazines, teacher's manuals, news articles, photographs, and outlines.

Series II – Zeedick Byzantine Catholic Papers and Publications (1922-1993, bulk c. 1960s-1970s)

Series II is housed in two boxes and contains publications, news clippings, photographs, financial records and reports, prayer cards, announcements, and bulletins. Publications from the annual Byzantine Catholic Churches Day of the Greater Pittsburgh Area held at Kennywood Park, West Mifflin, Pa. date from 1939 to 1993 (bulk 1966-75). The majority of this series relates to the Byzantine Church in Pittsburgh. News clippings, publications, and religious leaflets and announcements describe the history of the Carpatho-Rusyn people and the Byzantine Church in America and Pittsburgh. There are several announcements concerning the ordinations of Pittsburgh Byzantine priests and of Byzantine Archbishop Stephen Kocisko in 1968 and Bishop John Bilock in 1993. News clippings and church publications document the Fiftieth Annual Pilgrimage to the Shine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in 1984, led by Kocisko and Bilok. There are also various prayer cards, programs on Seminary Day - held at the SS. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Seminary on Pittsburgh's Observatory Hill in the North Side area of Pittsburgh, and financial papers from the Rosary Society of the Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church in North Oakland kept by Mrs. Andrew Zeedick, Sr. in the 1960s.

Series III – Eastern European Ethnic Music Phonograph Records (c. 1920s)

Series III consists of 21 78rpm Victor Orthophonic and Columbia records from the estate of John Zeedick, Sr. Most of the records have paper covers; the records state the language (Hungarian, Carpatho-Russian, or Slovak) and type of sound recording (vocal or orchestral.)
