The Pittsburgh Police Academy Records include administrative letters between academy and city officials, general orders amending police conduct and procedure, as well as cadet training, academic, and graduation records. The records contain administrative letters from Academy Principle George Purvis requesting the presence of certain members of the Fire and Police Departments to instruct classes at the academy during the early 1950s. A number of J. Edgar Hoover signed letters from the late 1950s acknowledge the Federal Bureau of Investigations local involvement in training police cadets at the academy. There are a variety of general orders from 1968 through 1969 amending conduct and police procedures covering proper courtesies to the public, sick leave, release of information to the media, and discharge of firearms. The records include 1966 assignments of promoted officers to command school, on the job training memorandums concerning the "coach and recruit" training program, and completed multiple-choice academy tests from 1970 and 1971. The records also include a 1965-1966 Police Academy financial audit report, 1969 recruit graduation reviews, and several 1966 Police and Fire Academy graduation ceremony programs.
