The Sheraden neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pa., was settled as 122 acres of farmland by William Sheraden in 1856. The area was part of Chartiers Township until the turn of the twentieth century, and was known by three names; Sheraden, Sheridan, and Sheridanville. The Borough of Sheraden was incorporated in 1894, prompted by its population increasing. Sheraden was annexed into the City of Pittsburgh in 1907 as the 43rd Ward, which spurred city-sponsored infrastructure improvements such as paving of streets, construction of a modern fire station, designation of parkland and community swimming pool, and provision of water services from the South Pittsburgh Water Company.
The Sheraden Borough Records contain administrative papers documenting the borough council's infrastructure operations from the 1890s through 1907, the year Sheraden Borough was incorporated into the city of Pittsburgh. These records include official ordinances and notices of their passage. The ordinances facilitated area development, such as the erection of telegraph poles, installation of streetcar tracks, authorization for tax levies, and street paving and curbing. The Records include petitions from local residents to the borough council for street and sewer improvements. There are numerous contracts between the borough engineer's office and regional contractors such as McKees Rocks Electrical Company, Trimble and Miller Civil Engineers, and the Ott Brothers. The Records also contain paid bond issuances, bond agreements with banking institutions like the Mercantile Trust Company, and a large amount of accounts payable receipts to both individuals and businesses.
