Andy Dugo (1905-2003) was a sportswriter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette who was most well-known for his column, "The Independents." Born in Sicily in 1905, he immigrated to the Garfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA when he was five years old and learned English by playing street sports with the other children. He graduated from Peabody High School and received degrees from Duquesne University in Economics and Columbia University in English Literature. In 1943, he enlisted in the Army and served as a translator in Italy.
Mr. Dugo played football throughout high school and qualified for a scholarship to Carnegie Tech, but he could not attend due to a medical condition. He played football for a year at Duquesne under Elmer Layden until a leg injury ended his football career. He began playing baseball with the Dearborn Tanks then moved to the Garfield A.C. (probably "Athletic Club") which had 40 straight wins in two seasons. Ultimately, he played for several sandlot clubs over the years and once pinch hit for Honus Wagner in the sandlot team on which they were both playing.
Mr. Dugo worked for several newspapers, coming to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette after its merger with the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph in 1960. He stayed until 1961 when he relocated to Las Vegas, NV. In 1962 he returned to Pittsburgh to fill an open position in the sports department at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, where he remained until his retirement in 1971. His column, "The Independents," focused on players from the sandlot leagues of the past and appeared in Tuesday and Thursday editions of the newspaper. After he retired, Mr. Dugo was inducted into several sports halls of fame.
