On May 17, 1992, a strike by the Teamsters Local 211 delivery drivers against the Pittsburgh Press newspaper shutdown the production and distribution facilities for the paper. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which used the same facilities as the Press, was also forced to curtail publication of its daily newspaper. On May 20th, the Post-Gazette introduced NewsFAX, a two page bulletin that was faxed to local businesses, convenience stores, hospitals, and news organizations. Hard copies of NewsFAX were also distributed through the city's public transit system and 7-11 convenience stores. The final NewsFAX was created on January 15, 1993, three days before the Post-Gazette resumed publishing its newspaper following the settlement of the strike.
The Pittsburgh Post Gazette NewsFAX News Bulletins contain copies of the publication from May 19, 1992 until January 15, 1993. The collection also contains bulletins that were dedicated to specific types of news: SportsFAX, MagFAX, TVFAX, and MoneyFAX. While early editions consisted of only a page or two, the publication eventually expanded to a five page document. The publication includes columns by Sally Kalson, Ron Cook, Tom Hritz, Bruce Keidan, and Peter Leo. Topics covered in the bulletins include the 1992 Presidential elections, the Pittsburgh Penguins' second Stanley Cup championship, and sale of the Pittsburgh Press to the Block family, owners of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
