Abstract
Oakdale School was built in 1894 on Hastings Street to serve the growing industrial community of Oakdale Borough, Pa., in Allegheny County. The school offered grades 1 through 8. A high school was built in the community in 1926. In 1949, Oakdale Schools merged with North Fayette Township Schools to form what is presently known as West Allegheny School District. The Oakdale School Board Records contain minutes in two volumes documenting board meetings held between May 8, 1934 and December 6, 1943 and January 4, 1944 and September 4, 1956. The collection also includes an accounts ledger dating between 1893 and 1898 which is believed to be associated with the school's early history.

History

Oakdale, Pa. is borough situated southwest of the city of Pittsburgh in Allegheny County. The borough was incorporated in 1892. Oakdale School, the borough's first multi-room school, was built in 1894 on 33 Hastings Street, replacing a one-room grammar school built several decades earlier. The school offered classes in grades 1 through 8 to the children of the borough's approximately 1200 inhabitants. A high school serving the community was built on Highland Avenue in 1926 and later demolished. Following Oakdale Schools' merger with North Fayette Township Schools in 1949 to create the West Allegheny School District, the Hastings Street school was used as a district elementary school. The building closed in 1972 and was sold into private ownership.

Scope and Content Notes

The Oakdale School Board Records contain board minutes in two volumes dating to May 8, 1934 through December 6, 1943, and January 4, 1944 through September 4, 1956. The minutes primarily record appointments, disbursements for faculty and staff salaries and school purchases, including textbooks. Also included in the collection is an accounts ledger of unknown provenance that is believed to have been maintained with the ledgers. The accounts ledger (1893-1898) records both sums owed and expenses paid to various local individuals, businesses, and organizations, including Oakdale Schools. The ledger dates to shortly after the borough's incorporation in 1892.
