History

The College Club of Pittsburgh was organized on October 16, 1908 by a group of nineteen women representing eleven colleges in Pennsylvania and incorporated April 20, 1912. The club served to promote the social and intellectual interests of women holding college degrees in the fields of education, literature, science and the arts. Organized into several departments including Athletic, Civic, Dramatic, Literary, Music and Social, the club was designed to spread information about shared member interests and raise public visibility of women holding college degrees. Club members resided in the greater Pittsburgh area and held degrees from a variety of institutions such as the University of Pittsburgh, Columbia University, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University) and Wellesley College.

From 1932 to 1992 the College Club had its own building at 143 North Craig Street in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood. In 1992, the club moved to a suite of rooms on the second floor of the Pittsburgh Athletic Association building at 4215 Fifth Avenue, where its educational and recreational programs were held. The club published a monthly column in the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph newspaper highlighting member activities and achievements and held regular group trips to New York City as well as educational tours in the greater Pittsburgh area.

At the height of the College Club's popularity during the mid-20th century, the membership grew to 800 and had a waiting list. The club celebrated its 100th anniversary on June 21st, 2008 featuring a keynote speech delivered by former Mayor of Pittsburgh Sophie Masloff.
